I remember reading, years ago, a definition of "intellectuals" as "a herd of independent minds."

With all the concern about diversity in ethnic and gender and gender-orientation diversity in colleges and universities, it's somewhat surprising -- or ought to be -- that actual diversity in ideas seems to be a much less important priority.  But ideas are what academia is supposed to be about.
