
The Obama campaign, unable to point to great success with the economy, its signature achievement (Obamacare) deeply unpopular with voters, will presumably seek to make the upcoming presidential election a referendum on whether Mitt Romney is a genuine human being with a core of real values, able to feel sympathy for other, less wealthy, mortals. (It will also, I think, stealthily use his Mormonism in order to stigmatize him as a weird über-white sexist right out of -- ugh! -- the 1950s, which is, in a sense, to raise the same issue again but from a different angle.)

(I should mention that I've known Robert Gay for a decade or so, that I have enormous respect for him, and that he was called to the First Quorum of the Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints less than a month ago, at the Church's annual General Conference.)
